DEF Delivery: Keeping Your Fleet Compliant with EPA Standards

Fleet Management · April 2, 2025 · 5 min read

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) became mandatory on virtually all heavy-duty diesel vehicles sold in the United States after 2010, when the EPA's stringent NOx emission standards took effect. For most fleet operators, DEF is a constant background cost and logistics challenge — one that's easy to overlook until a truck limps into the yard at reduced power or, worse, refuses to start.

What Is DEF and Why Is It Required?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a non-hazardous solution of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. It's injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, where it reacts with NOx emissions to convert them into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. Operating a diesel vehicle with a faulty or empty DEF system is a federal violation under 40 CFR Part 86.

What Happens When a Truck Runs Out of DEF?

  1. Warning light illuminates at approximately 10% remaining DEF tank level
  2. Audible warning and dash message at approximately 5% remaining
  3. Engine power de-rate (speed limited to 5 mph) when the tank runs dry
  4. No-start condition if the vehicle is turned off after DEF depletion in some models
